Madrid: The long-awaited arrival of Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid on Tuesday caused jubilation in the Spanish press and among the club’s supporters, but the French sensation will be well aware that he must perform to his reputation on the field.
Madrid was rocked by Monday’s formal announcement of the 15-time Champions League winners’ newest superstar acquisition. Mbappe arrived at the “club of (his) dream” after speculation and waiting for seven long years.
In reaction to the 25-year-old’s social media post in which he described the move as “a dream come true,” the front page of Marca screamed, “What you dreamed of,” and included a picture edit of Mbappe donning a Madrid shirt.
After the much-touted acquisitions of Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Luis Figo, and Cristiano Ronaldo around the turn of the century, sports newspaper AS said, “Mbappe at last” and proceeded to rejoice over “another galactico” joining Real’s stable.
“The cherry on the cake many years in the making thanks to the fantastic management” of Real president Florentino Perez was the description given to Mbappe by popular radio station Cadena COPE.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the news broke, Mbappe said during Tuesday’s press conference ahead of France’s pre-Euro 2024 friendly against Luxembourg that he felt “liberated, relieved” by his transfer to Madrid.“It’s an immense pleasure and a dream come true. This is the club I’ve always dreamed of being at. Real Madrid is the biggest player in the world. He will be under intense pressure to demonstrate his worth and play football from the opening whistle. His punishment from the Bernabeu will be severe if he does not. People here have been known to whine at Zidane and Cristiano, among others.
