Even though United had a terrible season under Erik ten Hag’s tutelage, the Portuguese midfielder was one bright spot.
At the end of the season, United won the FA Cup after defeating Manchester City in the final, thanks in large part to the 29-year-old’s 14 goals in all competitions. Despite rumours of a transfer to Bayern Munich, Fernandes still has two years left on his deal at Old Trafford, plus an additional year’s option.
In 2022, he inked a new four-year deal that brings him an estimated £240,000 per week. But according to the Guardian, Fernandes wants to be paid on par with the club’s top earners Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford because he feels underappreciated.
Sancho makes about £300,000 per week, while Rashford signs a new bumper deal worth roughly £360,000 per week. Casemiro, whose transfer to Saudi Arabia has been rumored, meantime, makes around £350,000 per week.
United are reportedly not trying to sell Fernandes because Sir Jim Ratcliffe considers him the team’s greatest player.
Still, Fernandes knows that his next deal should be profitable; he’s 29 years old. Supposedly, the playmaker is worried about the club’s future and wants to know who would take over for Ten Hag in the event that the Dutchman is fired.
Last month, in an article for The Players’ Tribune, United’s captain made it clear that he want to stay with the club.
Fernandes elaborated by saying he needs to be rewarded for his goals. His favorite thing in the world, he wrote, was to walk out on the Old Trafford field. It pains me to depart. I have always dreamed about this.

Fernandes has made 233 appearances for United since joining in January 2020. In that time, he has scored 79 goals and contributed 66 assists. Given United’s current rebuilding efforts, the loss of Fernandes would be a devastating setback.
United had a rough season overall, winning the FA Cup while finishing in eighth place in the Premier League and losing in the Champions League group round.
United’s co-owners INEOS are trying to sell players in order to raise more money than the club’s budget of slightly over £35 million for the summer transfer window.
