Chelsea legend Cole Palmer shines at Media Day ahead of Euro 2024
Conor Gallagher, who is about to make his big event debut at the Euros, has revealed that he was rejected from playing for Scotland and England’s youth teams due to his perceived lack of ability
After falling short in England’s junior system, Conor Gallagher has dropped hints that he could have been a future member of the Scotland squad.
After an explosive season, the midfielder has been named captain and has been instrumental in Chelsea’s run to the Champions League next year.
After catching Gareth Southgate’s eye during the 2023–24 season, Gallagher was able to secure a spot in England’s squad that will challenge in Germany beginning with Sunday’s match against Serbia. However, after a short stint with Scotland almost a decade ago, the 24-year-old reflected on a more challenging time in his international career.
The England young squad didn’t consider me good enough to play when I was fifteen or sixteen years old, Gallagher said Thursday. To find out how I would do, I probably tried training with a Scotland squad, but they were also unimpressed.
So, I was fortunate enough to remain a member of the England youth setup after regaining my place there. After making his debut in 2017 with the England under-17s and earning four caps, Gallagher remained a mainstay in England’s minor teams until his promotion to the senior squad in 2021.
The former Crystal Palace loanee Gallagher has 12 caps after earning his debut against San Marino; however, he has not played in a major event since going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as a substitute and not getting any playing time. Many clubs will be keeping an eye on the midfielder’s performances in Germany because Chelsea is rumored to be thinking about selling him during the summer transfer window.
The Blues have allegedly placed their asking price for the Chelsea academy graduate at £50 million, and Premier League rivals like Aston Villa and Tottenham are interested in signing him.
