Granit Xhaka was Switzerland’s conductor-in-chief in their win 3-1 over Hungary 🎼

Switzerland won 3-1 against Hungary in their opening match of Group A at EURO 2024.

Switzerland beat Hungary in opening match

Striker Duah put Switzerland ahead in the 12th minute from Aebischer’s long pass. The goal was initially ruled offside but after consulting VAR, the goal was recognized. This was Duah’s first goal for Switzerland, in only his second appearance. Aebischer then also opened his international goals account with a stunning curling shot just before half-time, giving Switzerland complete control of the match.

Hungary, who qualified impressively under Italian coach Marco Rossi, became a distinct opponent in the second half. They got an important equalizer in the 66th minute thanks to Barnabas Varga, who successfully headed in Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross.

Switzerland held off a late onslaught from Hungary. Embolo, coming on as a substitute after an injury-plagued season, capitalised on a mistake by Hungary’s defence in stoppage time to seal the win for Switzerland. The win moves the Swiss level on points with Germany, who beat Scotland 5-1 on Friday.

Hungary are dark horses at Euro 2024, opening their Group A campaign against Switzerland. Marco Rossi’s side were unbeaten in qualifying and look a much improved side from their disappointing group stage exit at Euro 2020. A 4-0 win over England in 2022 showed they can be a dangerous side.

Meanwhile, Switzerland endured a difficult qualifying campaign and finished second behind Romania, putting coach Murat Yakin under intense scrutiny but he retained his position.

Having passed the knockout round in the last 5 international tournaments, Switzerland is at least an experienced team in this arena.
