Despite having defender Porteous sidelined, Scotland’s opening match ended in a 1-5 loss to Germany. They will therefore be playing under a lot of pressure against Switzerland, who defeated Hungary in the opening game. Switzerland’s chances of beating Scotland are thought to be higher because of their superior and more well-rounded team.
But the game took a different turn as it progressed. The Scottish squad came out of the gate with great initiative, vying for possession of the ball and planning numerous offensive raids. Midfielder Scott McTominay gave them the lead in the 13th minute, and they were well rewarded.
The midfielder sporting a Man United shirt received a pass from a teammate and took a not-too-dangerous shot. But Fabian Schar, the midfielder, mishandled the ball and cleared it into his own net. McTominay was given the goal after verification.
After conceding the goal, the Swiss team quickly attacked. They gave Angus Gunn, the goalie, plenty of opportunity to score. The Swiss squad tied the score at one in the 26th minute. The game was leveled after a careless ball back from Scotland defender Tony Ralston, as midfielder Shaqiri struck magnificently into the upper corner.
The Swiss squad was able to plan numerous well-coordinated attacks and raise morale thanks to this goal. Ndoye got the ball in the net for the Scottish team in the 33rd minute, but the goal was ruled offside.
Both sides aggressively attacked and produced clear scoring opportunities in the last minutes of the game, but they were unable to take advantage of them. Following Embolo’s lob in the 81st minute, the Swiss team had one more opportunity to put the ball in the opponent’s net, but it was disallowed for an offside. Furthermore, Ndoye and Amdouni both missed good finishing opportunities.
Midfielder Hanley of Scotland came dangerously close to making it 2-1 in the 67th minute. But after his teammate gave him a free kick, he struck the post.
Scotland and Switzerland ended up drawing 1-1. Scotland earned their first point at EURO 2024 with this outcome. Switzerland, on the other hand, finished with four points, placed second in Group A, and will most likely follow Germany to advance to the next round.
Scotland will play Hungary in the last round, and Switzerland will play Germany for first place in the group.
