Despite the lopsided 1-0 scoreline, Spain advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 thanks to their dominant performance against Italy.
La Roja had several opportunities to score in this exciting Group B match, but they were ultimately defeated by an own goal by Riccardo Calafiori in the second half.
Pedri had a header saved, Alvaro Morata had his shot blocked from close range, and Fabian Ruiz had a long-range shot saved brilliantly by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the first half.
After missing a routine early header, winger Nico Williams tormented Italy’s right defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo and set up the game-winning goal in the 55th minute with a dangerous cross that Calafiori deflected into the net.
Italy hardly had a chance to tie the game before a late stretch of possession that Spain easily defended, and Williams came close to settling the game in the 70th minute when his effort crashed against the bar.

Despite dominating play throughout much of the first half, Spain were unable to score because Italy’s goalkeeper, Fabian Ruiz and Alvaro Morata, made crucial stops.
Williams and Lamine Yamal were having fun on the wings, and Spain were lacking only the final touch.

In order to rejuvenate his team for the remaining minutes of the match, Luis de la Fuente substituted Ferran Torres and Alex Baena for Pedri and Yamal, respectively, at the 70-minute mark.
With a game to spare, Spain cruised to a 1-0 victory and advanced to the next round. Ayoze Perez had a late scoring opportunity, but Spain had to settle for the draw.
