The summer transfer season presents Manchester United with a number of significant decision-making opportunities. They also need to work out how to handle peripheral figures whose futures are unclear as preparations for new arrivals under Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s authority get underway.

The club’s management is targeting the summer transfer window to bolster their defenses by bringing in a striker, defensive midfielder, and center back. However, if they want to strengthen their offense any more, they will need to sell players to get the necessary finances.Another issue for United is that they have players in specific places that may be sold, but those aren’t the most pressing areas to reinforce right now, so it could leave them weaker in the end.
Take the starting four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay, Marcus Rashford, and Harry Maguire as an example. You can’t help but think of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign just thinking about those names, and it’s obvious they won’t be a good fit for Erik ten Hag’s style of play moving ahead.
Perhaps Rashford is the lone outlier in that regard. After a disappointing second season, the Dutchman has lost his starting position to Alejandro Garnacho, despite his spectacular debut. Both his future and the version of himself we see in it are up in the air at this point. The problem for United is that they would consider offers for all four players, but they are now unable to afford to lose any of them and are not actively trying to trade them. Despite the dismal season, the attacking line would be much weaker without Rashford. Next season, they would only have Garnacho as a senior option on the left wing. He could be replaced by a new winger, but the team needs to shore up other areas as well, so selling someone who isn’t absolutely necessary doesn’t make sense.
Furthermore, with Donny van de Beek, Christian Eriksen, Sofyan Amrabat, and Casemiro all potentially departing, the midfield options are already pretty limited. They cannot afford to lose a good squad player like McTominay on top of that. The problem for United is that they would consider offers for all four players, but they are now unable to afford to lose any of them and are not actively trying to trade them.
