The most spectacular show of football in the most prestigious international tournament of the summer, Germany’s quarterfinal loss to Spain in Euro 2024, was unmatched. Although both sides battled valiantly to go to the semifinals, the host nation felt they should have had a chance to win the match in overtime.

After a tense first half, Dani Olmo scored in the first few minutes of the second to break the deadlock. The RB Leipzig midfielder was found by Lamine Yamal, and he calmly slotted a low drive past Manuel Neuer, who was visibly shaken.

 

 

 

 

After some great work by Joshua Kimmich, the game went into extra time when Florian Wirtz, another fantastic young talent, volleyed in a late equalizer. The extra half was a nail-biter, with Julian Nagelsmann’s team arguing for a penalty before Mikel Merino’s last-second header sent the home team packing.
