Mason Greenwood’s planned transfer to Marseille from Manchester United would include a 50% share of any future sales of the player in exchange for £26.6 million.
As a long-term departure from Old Trafford draws near, Greenwood has approved a move to the French club.
According to Telegraph Sport’s sources, United have included a sell-on clause in the agreement that may be worth half of the earnings from a future sale. This is likely due to the belief that Greenwood will not be permanently transferred to Marseille.
The large sell-on clause is one factor that has led United to lower their initial £40 million assessment for Greenwood. Marseille have agreed to pay the 22-year-old a base transfer fee of £23.2 million plus an additional £3.4 million in add-ons.
Even if the agreement isn’t finalized just yet, Greenwood is about to go to France to do a medical and sign a contract after giving his assent to the transfer. Several clubs, including Lazio, have expressed interest in signing him.
The United player is facing accusations of attempted rape and assault, and some Marseille fans have taken to social media to voice their disapproval, using the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome.
Along with the French club’s president, Pablo Longoria, Marseille mayor Benoît Payan has spoken out against the transfer and said he would urge Longoria to scrap the contract.
After receiving an overwhelming amount of criticism from both fans and employees, United decided to loan Greenwood to Getafe in the summer of last year rather than reintegrate him into the first team. Are United and three center backs in negotiations?United are seeking to strengthen their central defense with the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, a striker from the Netherlands, from Bologna for £36.5 million.
Following Raphaël Varane’s release and Willy Kambwala’s reported £9.9 million move to Villarreal this week, United are reportedly in negotiations with three potential center-backs: Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Jarrad Branthwaite.
Now that Everton has improved its position over the left-footed England central defender and lessened the need to sell, United are considering making a third and final bid for Branthwaite. This comes after Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana’s mooted move to Aston Villa from Goodison Park has boosted Everton’s position.
Even though United’s hopes of acquiring the 22-year-old are dwindling, Everton has rejected offers from the Red Devils worth £43 million and £50 million in an effort to keep Branthwaite, who is demanding about £75 million. After making it apparent they would not meet Everton’s asking price, United must now determine if there is any point in making one last effort.
United have also been interested in defender De Ligt of Bayern Munich and Lille forward Yoro. United have reached an agreement with Lille about the transfer of Yoro, and they are currently attempting to persuade the highly regarded 18-year-old to join Old Trafford instead of holding out for a move to Real Madrid.
United still haven’t given up hope of signing one of the most sought-after young players in the world, and they seem to be putting that deal ahead of everything else right now, even if Real were supposedly Yoro’s first choice earlier in the summer. United appear to be able to swiftly expedite a deal for De Ligt in the event that it does not materialize.
It is unclear if United will pursue Yoro and De Ligt as potential signings if their pursuit of Branthwaite is shelved. However, the club would ideally prefer to add a left-footer and a right-footer to their central defense positions.
There are a lot of clubs interested in United midfielder Scott McTominay. United has set a worth of up to £30 million on McTominay, and Fulham have been unsuccessful in their attempts to acquire midfield reinforcements since João Palhinha left for Bayern earlier in the summer. No club has come close to meeting this valuation.
