After the 2023/24 season, Raphael Varane has officially left MU because his contract has expired. To replace the 2018 World Cup champion, the Red Devils have planned to strengthen 1-2 central defenders in this summer transfer window.
Last week, MU completed the procedure to recruit center-back Leny Yoro from Lille for about 52 million pounds. After this deal, the Red Devils still want to buy 1-2 more center-backs. Among them, Matthijs de Ligt is considered one of the potential targets.
According to British media, MU has reached a personal agreement with De Ligt. However, the red shirt team of Manchester has not yet reached an agreement with Bayern Munich.
For his part, Bayern President Uli Hoeness suggested that Matthijs de Ligt could move to MU this summer when he mentioned the name of coach Erik ten Hag.
“There is a possibility that one of our central defenders will leave. De Ligt is Dutch, the MU coach is also Dutch. If De Ligt wants to stay, we don’t feel any problem. As for Dayot Upamecano, I don’t want to sell him,” Mr. Hoeness shared.
Matthijs de Ligt is a former student of coach Erik ten Hag. After taking over Ajax in 2018, Ten Hag made De Ligt the team’s youngest captain. In the 2018/19 season, under the guidance of the Dutch strategist, Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
In the summer of 2019, De Ligt joined Juventus for £65.6 million. After 2 years, he joined Bayern Munich for £68 million. To date, the Dutch midfielder has played 73 times in all competitions for Die Roten.
