After a big shakeup at INEOS, Manchester United have opened the door for David de Gea, whose “return plans heat up.
Reportedly, by firing John Murtough, Manchester United may have opened the door for a possible David de Gea comeback. Following his release from United last summer, De Gea took a year off, but he is getting ready to play again this season.
After failing to agree on a new contract with an updated, decreased wage, the Spaniard’s 12-year stay at Old Trafford came to an end at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
United and Premier League legend De Gea didn’t get the farewell he deserved because his status was uncertain throughout the season.Murtough and Erik ten Hag, two important persons he blamed for his lackluster departure, were allegedly not on good terms with him when he left.
If Murtough and Ten Hag were no longer with the club, De Gea reportedly told his close associates that he would be eager to return to United, but on less rosy conditions.
The latter will continue in his role as manager for another year after INEOS decided he was their best option following a month of searching for a possible successor.
Instead of offering the Dutchman a new contract, United extended his current one by 12 months until 2026, implying that he is still being evaluated.Dan Ashworth, the sporting director of Newcastle United, has taken Murtough’s position, however Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group was in charge of his departure.
Along with chief executive Richard Arnold and other high-ranking executives, Murtough left Old Trafford when the INEOS regime began.
Omar Berrada left Manchester City to replace Arnold, while Jason Wilcox has been appointed technical director and Christopher Vivell is United’s new director of global talent.
Even though Ten Hag’s unexpected stay puts an end to any hope that De Gea’s return is possible, he has shown time and again that he can get his players to put aside their differences.Following his public feud with Ten Hag last season, Jadon Sancho appeared certain he would never play for United again. But Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s group oversaw the exit of Murtough, who has since been replaced by Newcastle United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth.
Murtough is one of several high-ranking executives to have departed Old Trafford at the start of the INEOS regime, including chief executive Richard Arnold.

While Ten Hag’s somewhat surprising stay may derail any theory that the door could be open for De Gea’s return, he has proven that he can navigate past previous issues with his players.

That said, while De Gea is set to announce his new club shortly, he is highly unlikely to return to Old Trafford even after Murtough’s exit.
The Athletic add that he is prioritising a destination that would guarantee stability for him and his family in or out of Europe.
In the United States, De Gea would reportedly prefer the West Coast, but there will also be opportunities to remain in Europe.
