Since leaving Manchester yesterday afternoon, United Kingdom time, Manchester United has already embarked on its pre-season tour of the United States of America. They have already reached their destination.
The Red Devils have already competed in two preseason games, the first of which was a defeat to Rosenborg by a score of 1-0, and the second of which was a far more impressive performance in a victory over Glasgow Rangers by a score of 2-0.
At this point, the team coached by Erik ten Hag will compete in three matches against Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool. These matches will take place in Los Angeles, San Diego, and South Carolina.
An announcement was made yesterday regarding the 29-man group, which includes both senior players and younger players who will be participating.
It is interesting to note that Steve McClaren will remain at Carrington in order to train several major talents who will not be participating in the United States trip due to their obligations towards international competitions this summer, specifically Euro 2024 and Copa America.
Within the next couple of weeks, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Joshua Zirkzee, and Facundo Pellistri will all make their way back to Carrington in order to begin working with the United coach.
Due to the fact that all of the players named above, with the exception of Pellistri, are essential members of the first team squad, the inability to call on these players will be a significant problem.
There is a lack of clarity on the extent to which the newly acquired player Zirkzee will play a role in the team’s operations; however, the remaining five names are undoubtedly all among United’s finest players, or they are surely in the running to be.
In addition, fans in the United States will be quite dissatisfied because they will not be able to look forward to seeing fan favorites like Mainoo, Martinez, and of course Fernandes.
In addition, after United return from their trip to the United States, they will not have any further pre-season games because they will be playing the Community Shield against their rivals in the derby, Manchester City, on the 10th of August. Before the opening game of the season, for instance, they played pre-season matches against RC Lens at Old Trafford and Athletic Bilbao in Dublin. Both of these matches took place in August of last year. During this year, they will not be able to enjoy this privilege.
Ten Hag will, ideally, want to play his strongest eleven since defeating City once more at Wembley would be a further feather in his cap and a fantastic way to begin the season with confidence.
However, it is difficult to conceive that any of the players who are still at Carrington will be able to start the game or even participate for more than thirty minutes of the game.
On the first day of the season, Manchester United will play a home encounter against Fulham, followed by two challenging meetings, one of which will be played away from home against Brighton. Finally, on September 1st, they will play their archrivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag will undoubtedly be expecting that he will be able to call upon his best players on the first day of the Premier League, despite the fact that the Community Shield may be an unreasonable expectation. However, with just maybe two weeks of training and one match before the Premier League season begins, this scenario is not ideal.
There is a possibility that Dalot and Fernandes would return earlier than expected because they were eliminated from the Euro 2024 competition on July 5th, which means that they have already had twenty days off. Zirkzee was knocked out on July 10th, but he had already taken a brief vacation prior to being called up as an emergency replacement in the Dutch team. Zirkzee became unavailable for the match.
Despite this, Mainoo, Shaw, Garnacho, and Martinez all made it to the finals of their respective tournaments, and as a result, they did not leave their international duty until the 15th of July. Therefore, it is quite doubtful that any of these players will return to Carrington until the first week of August at the earliest. This is not something that United fans can look forward to.
