Once again, Real Madrid has successfully used its fame to “steal” a top star from Bayern Munich. After David Alaba in 2021, it is Alphonso Davies’ turn, expected to move to the Santiago Bernabeu on a free transfer next season.
Real Madrid have successfully signed Alphonso Davies on a free transfer next season.
According to Diario AS journalist Tomas Roncero, Real Madrid and Alphonso Davies have reached a pre-agreement on a free transfer in the summer of 2025, when the 23-year-old Canadian left-back’s contract at the Allianz Arena expires. In return, the La Liga and Champions League champions will reward the player with a hefty signing-on bonus, similar to the one that saw Kylian Mbappe arrive from PSG.
If the report is correct, it would not be the first time Real Madrid have signed a star from European giants Bayern Munich for nothing. Los Blancos previously snapped up left-back David Alaba in a similar fashion. Real Madrid also bought midfielder Toni Kroos in 2014 for a bargain €25 million, a year before his Bayern contract expired. Kroos has gone on to become one of the best midfielders of all time at Real Madrid, while Alaba has also been a success story, proving to be a key player as the new No. 4 to replace former captain Sergio Ramos.
President Florentino Perez’s policy is making many big clubs in the world angry but they don’t know how to stop it. The position of “king” of the Champions League is helping Los Blancos win in every target they approach. However, that strategy is not always effective, the recent case of young center back Leny Yoro is an example. Real Madrid only agreed to spend 20 million EUR for the French talent, who only had one year left on his contract with Lille. But Man.United jumped in and spent 60 million EUR to get this player.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti hopes Ferland Mendy improves his fitness to take on the role of left-back this season.
Real Madrid have been in turmoil so far. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga returned to Chelsea after his loan expired. Defender Nacho left and Toni Kroos retired. In the opposite direction, they have just welcomed Mbappe and young striker Endrick. And with Alphonso Davies having to wait another year, coach Carlo Ancelotti hopes Ferland Mendy can improve his fitness to take on the left-back role, while backup Fran Garcia plays better.
