Having three years at Old Trafford, the French defender left Manchester United earlier this summer. Originally connected to clubs in the Saudi Pro League and Inter Miami, he finally chose to play under Cesc Fabregas at Como as he signed a two-year contract.Varane went to X upon the official confirmation from the Serie A side, quoting the team’s tweet and said, “I’m super excited, incredibly proud and can’t wait to get started!!”

Remained inactive for more than a month with a muscle ailment, the former Real Madrid defender had an injury-hit campaign in his last season at United. Eventually, he showed up in 32 games total, including the FA Cup final when they defeated Manchester City to raise the FA Cup.Monday will see Fabregas’ team in action as they challenge reigning Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal in a pre-season friendly. Varane, however, might show up for the Italians for the first time on Saturday when they head to Wolfsburg in a second friendly encounter.

Raphael Varane joins a Serie A team following Man Utd’s leave

Having left Manchester United at the end of the 2023/24 season, Raphael Varane has formally joined Serie A side Como.

Joining the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2021, the defender made 93 appearances overall across all events. Before his contract expired this summer, he had an injury-ravaged three-season tenure at Old Trafford.

Currently signed on a two-year contract with recently promoted Italian team Como, the 31-year-old will play in the Serie A next season. Varane is scheduled to team with former Arsenal icon Cesc Fabregas, appointed Como’s head coach following a strong campaign as Osian Roberts’s assistant.

Declaring Varane’s arrival on the club’s website, Fabregas said: “R Raphael is a unique player whose signing serves as evidence of the desire we have for this team. His career has seen him win so much; it is impossible to overestimate the value of his expertise in two of the top leagues worldwide. Beginning working with him excites me.Varane revealed his “enthusiasm” for the upcoming relocation and his delight at starting a “special project” in Italy.

“I am really delighted and eager about this new project,” he remarked. “Starting and getting to know the team and my colleagues excites me. I wanted to learn more as I understood how unique and unusual this initiative is to all the ones I have been presented.

“I find great delight. Though there is a lot to do, it is very fascinating. Having a great deal of experience at the highest level, it is wonderful to be able to impart that knowledge to let a club develop itself to the top.

“I shall see Cesc once more, but this time not as an adversary. I am quite glad; his playing philosophy and football enthusiasm truly appeal to me. We had rather simple communication when we chatted, thus I hope our outcomes will be really good. In any situation, I show great humility to assist the club and team in developing.”

Varane’s contract allows him to stay at the club until June 2026 with an option to extend locked into his agreement.
